The Mars Volta is an American progressive rock band formed in 2001 by Cedric Bixler-Zavala (vocals) and Omar Rodríguez-López (guitar) after the breakup of their previous band, At the Drive-In. Known for their experimental sound, complex compositions, and fusion of progressive rock, jazz, Latin, and punk influences, they gained critical acclaim with albums like De-Loused in the Comatorium (2003) and Frances the Mute (2005). The band went on hiatus in 2012 but reunited in 2022 with a more refined, experimental sound. Their work is characterized by surreal lyrics, intricate instrumentation, and a constantly evolving style.
