By the time Danzig 4P appeared in 1994, Glenn Danzig had established one of heavy metal’s most distinctive identities. Rather than repeat the formula of his first three albums, he took the band’s blues-soaked heaviness into stranger, darker and more experimental territory. The result is a record steeped in gothic atmosphere, industrial textures, hypnotic rhythms and an almost suffocating sense of menace. The opening assault of “Brand New God” is classic Danzig, but elsewhere the album becomes considerably more adventurous. “Little Whip” crawls along with a sinister, blues-drenched groove, while “Cantspeak” introduces reversed guitars and an unsettling, otherworldly atmosphere. The magnificent “Going Down to Die” and “I Don’t Mind the Pain” showcase Glenn’s extraordinary vocal range, moving effortlessly between restrained crooning and full-throated aggression. Produced by Glenn Danzig and Rick Rubin, 4P also marked the final studio album featuring the band’s original line-up of John Christ, Eerie Von and Chuck Biscuits. Its combination of traditional heavy metal and increasingly experimental songwriting makes it a fascinating conclusion to that era of Danzig’s career. This forthcoming Indie Exclusive Silver Vinyl edition is part of the RSD Essential series. Issued through American Recordings, it features the complete original twelve-track album on standard-weight silver vinyl, housed in a gatefold sleeve with a printed inner sleeve. It is an official vinyl repress of the 1994 album.
