Wah Wah Wino pour it to the rim with Sli Town Crier’s cracking debut LP ‘Auditions’, a collaged tapestry of needlepoint steppers, whisked ambient folk dance and more crooked steez, stitched together from his ample archive by key label lush, Morgan Buckley. FFO The KLF, FSOL, Radioactive Lamb… Last spotted on a handful of cuts in the ‘KWALK’ (2022) comp, Sli Town Crier finds his feet again across an abundance of material in ‘Audition’. Like the ‘KWALK’ set, Sli hands the material over to Morgan Buckley, who deftly parses and knits the material into a mixtape-like soundtrack to joyrides down Irish electronica backroads in search of a mythical rave. It’s wonderfully trippy and a lot of fun that doesn’t take itself too seriously, following waves of sensations where they go, opening with a scene of fantasy ambient sylphs recalling cuts from Matthew Barney film score, to echoes of Radioactive Lamb’s breakbeat techno screwballs, dusted hang drum downbeats, zippy D&B, and crystalline folktronica audities on the A-side. B-side, the range and depth of his archive continues to reveal itself, from passages of Beatrice Dillon-like feathered rhythms, into choppy bruk funk and rudely woodcut dembow x Irish folk mutations that could only come from the ludic minds of the Wah Wah Wino lot.
