PT Musik: Consumação LP

PT Musik (fka Puto Tito) epitomises Príncipe’s brand of rugged but melancholic batida on a standout new album dripping with piquant hooks and puckered grooves set to travel far beyond his Lisbon base.

One of the many joys of following Príncipe is hearing its artists grow over the years, as with Domingos Aleixo’s shifts from a bare-boned but vividly colourful 2019 debut ‘Carregando A Vida Atrás Das Costas’, to the notably lusher, more romantic harmonies of the ‘Não Sou Perfito’ 7”, which introduced his name change in 2021.The confident swagger and shrug-it-off sentiments ramps up on his second LP ‘Consumação’, featuring eight cuts that amount to a properly charming self-portrait of an artist coming into his own.

The blend of reflective melody and variegated, seductive and then urgent rhythms that has kept us all rapt to Príncipe is in ideal effect on this one. Themes of broken relationships, loneliness and navigating life’s travails prompt PT to his strongest work, manifest in a strong grasp of expressive, extended melody and breezy vibes that transcends language and speaks directly to both dancing bodies and dreamy minds.

Hooks are bitter-sweet, edged with a tang of heightened emotional maturity from tarraxho opener ’Nha Budjura’ thru a sentimental fave ‘Hot Girl’ that first appeared on 2020’s ‘Verão Dark Hope’ comp, and now closes the LP with a glimpse of their former self. In between, they serve the club with proper orders of sinuous breeziness on ‘Lembranças’ and ‘Leave me Alone’, plus the needling heat of ‘Movimento’, reserving the most poignant moment to the ‘90s R&B soul-inflected ’Não Acredito’ and elegant, dusky ambiguity of ‘Me Suga’ with minor key harpsichord and pitch-bent leads bound to burrow into memory.
