All the hallmarks of classic, innovative mid ‘80s, queer and Afro-Latinate club music are in effect on a superb romp comparable with the likes of Tom Carruthers or Jamal Moss in terms of its retro-futurist finesse. Price himself gives cap tips to everything from Z-Factor’s primal neon pulse” to “trench coat-era Prince, WBMX cut-ups, and Ron Hardy’s splice happy Muzic Box mania” and we can’t disagree, as the trax bounce from proper R. Hardy-style sleaze in ‘Gone’, thru Belgian new beat-adjacent acid gunk on ‘Generation’, and haughty mid-tempo pumper ‘Release’, to the Gherkin-jerking tang of ‘Defender’, and sexy grip of ‘Kick It’ and ‘Visage’ echoing the way UK & EU synth-pop and Italo disco percolated into the Chi via imports.
