Ashby, Dorothy: Afro-Harping LP

Afro-Harping is an excellent late 60's soulful jazz harp album from Dorothy Ashby recorded for Chess Records' Cadet subsidiary with arrangements by Richard Evans. From the opening funky groove with Theremin to the reverb heavy harp solos Ashby stretches the capabilities of the harp throughout and proved that the instrument was way more than just an exotic orchestral color. Ashby's harmonic selections are as up to date now as they were then; Freddy Hubbard's "Sunflower" becomes a mind blowing mix of jazz, percussion and rock.
